Who
Learn how to spice up speeches with humorous anecdotes and stories from the animated, creative and inimitable Dr Catherine Lim. A prolific and accomplished writer, her books are used by universities and colleges. She was a lecturer of Sociolinguistics in the RELC. Now, she gives lectures at seminars and conferences and is a regular guest speaker on cruise ships. She is also a political commentator.

Why is it worth your time?
Dr. Lim was awarded the Southeast Asia Write Award in 1999 and an Honorary Doctorate in Literature by Murdoch University, Australia in 2000. In 2003, she was awarded the Chevalier de L’Ordre des Arts et Des Lettres by the French Minister for Culture and Communication, and in 2005 was appointed an Ambassador for the Hans Christian Andersen Foundation in Copenhagen.

Storytelling is one of the oldest performance arts in the world. Nearly every culture has its band of wandering philosophers who instruct people in the paths of wisdom through the charm of stories. The art of storytelling is one of the most useful things in the arsenal of the public speaker. In the words of an ancient philosopher, “He who tells stories rules the world!”

The usefulness of this skill is reflected in the Toastmasters programme of speech exposure. There is an advanced manual on “Storytelling”. Genres include the folk tale, personal stories, didactic stories, stories told with feeling, and stories from history. How do we learn to do this well, and mesmerize the audience with the truths of life garnered from kernel of stories from life and bygone generations?

Topics to be covered include:
Ø Finding your story, and tailoring the material
Ø Plot and structure in the story form
Ø Techniques of delivery: characterization and visualization
Ø Personalizing stories and telling stories with feeling
Ø Making history come alive and how not to bore your audience with moralizing

About the Trainer:
Ng Seng Chuan is the Master Trainer of Rhetoric Speech Consultants, a speech training centre specializing in the teaching of phonetics and pronunciation, as well as speech improvement and public speaking. In addition to being an experienced speaker with 25 years of professional involvement, Seng Chuan holds numerous diplomas in speech training (FLCM, LTCL, ALAM), besides holding a BA (Hons) in English.

A member of the Lion City Toastmasters Club and mentor at Tanglin Toastmasters Club, Seng Chuan holds the title of ATMG. He has won the championship trophy for the District 80 Impromptu Speech Contests in Hong Kong in 2007, and most recently as 1st Runner-Up in 2009. Seng Chuan is also a member of the Storytellers Circle, and an associate member of the Singapore Association of Storytellers.
